What if your life started just as the world was ending?
What if you were sent to a disintegrating earth for a reason - a specific mission only you could accomplish? What would that mission be? Who would you be?
When would your journey begin?
Where would it start?
How would it end?
Why you?
Why not you?
…
Answering those questions has been my life over the past three months… as I write a story I’ve never read before, set in a terrifying time that I can only imagine. It’s a work of fiction, but it’s based on Scripture, plus ideas that are very real to me.
We all have a purpose. We were all created for a reason. We’re not here by accident.
God knew us before we were born; before He even knitted us together in our mother’s womb, He had a plan for us (Psalm 139:13-18, NIV).
God loved us before we were born. He loves us still. He always will.
In the eighth chapter of Romans we’re asked, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: ‘For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’ “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:35-39, NIV).

My story, so far, includes all of that: martyrs, life, death, angels, demons, present, future, power-hungry supervillains and a special creation - born for a special reason - to do something great for God.
My characters have a lot on their plates so far: earthquakes, wars, executions, famine, lawlessness, devastating meteor showers, zombies… ok, maybe not zombies, but you get the picture. And it’s easy when we know we have a lot on our plates to feel overwhelmed and abandoned, like we can’t possibly make a difference alone in the seemingly impossible situation we’re in. My characters have felt that way.
But they are not alone, just like we are not alone. God is always there. Just a whisper away, my father says.
God also gave us freewill, though. You don’t have to play the game. You don’t have to call on Him. You can sit on the sidelines or walk away entirely. But I bet if you got a peek at the playbook, you’d be in the game in no time.
God has a plan and a purpose for us, greater than we can ever imagine. And I only hope that when I’m done writing this novel, you’ll see that...
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified” (Romans 8:28-30, NIV).
